The 2026 Yamaha GP HO: The Performance WaveRunner Most People Should Actually Buy

What if we've all been asking the wrong question?

Instead of asking, "Which WaveRunner is the fastest?" maybe we should be asking, "Which one will still make sense after five years of ownership?"

Because horsepower sells. Superchargers sell. Bigger numbers always grab attention. But when it's your money, your fuel bill and your maintenance costs, the conversation changes.

That's exactly where the 2026 Yamaha GP HO with Audio gets interesting.

Rather than chasing headline horsepower, Yamaha has focused on something many riders will appreciate more: real-world performance.

Power comes from Yamaha's proven 1,898 cc naturally aspirated High Output four-cylinder engine. There's no supercharger here, and that's entirely the point. You still get strong acceleration, excellent mid-range pull and crisp throttle response, but with lower mechanical complexity and the ability to run on regular unleaded fuel.

If the GP HO is so good, why does Yamaha even build the supercharged GP SVHO?

Simple. Some riders want the fastest, most powerful machine available, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But here's the question very few people ask.

How often do you actually use every last bit of that extra performance?

For many recreational riders, the GP HO delivers all the acceleration they're ever likely to need, while offering potentially lower running costs and simpler long-term ownership. It isn't necessarily the faster choice, but it may well be the smarter one.

Performance isn't just about straight-line speed, either.

The lightweight NanoXcel2 hull gives the GP HO sharp, confidence-inspiring handling, while the race-inspired riding position, narrow two-piece seat and adjustable handlebars help you stay connected to the craft when conditions become more demanding.

Technology has also been kept refreshingly practical.

Yamaha's RiDE dual-throttle system makes slow-speed manoeuvring, reversing and docking remarkably easy, while the 4.3-inch Connext colour display provides engine information, ride settings and smartphone connectivity without feeling cluttered.

Then there's the feature everyone notices first—the factory-fitted Bluetooth audio system.

Normally we'd dismiss speakers on a performance machine as a gimmick, but Yamaha has actually done this properly. The marine-grade system features Auto Volume Control, automatically adjusting the sound level as your speed changes. It's not essential, but it's one of those small touches that genuinely improves a day on the water.

From a South African perspective, this WaveRunner arguably makes even more sense.

Most of us don't replace our toys every season. We buy them, maintain them and expect them to last. A naturally aspirated engine with fewer highly stressed components may appeal to owners thinking beyond the first summer. That's not a guarantee of lower maintenance, but it is a legitimate consideration when comparing ownership over the long term.

So, should you buy one?

If you're chasing outright speed above everything else, the GP SVHO remains Yamaha's flagship performance model.

But if you want a WaveRunner that combines sharp handling, strong acceleration, practical technology and what could prove to be a simpler ownership experience, the GP HO deserves a very close look.

Sometimes the smartest purchase isn't the one with the biggest horsepower figure.

It's the one you'll still be smiling about years after everyone else has stopped arguing over the spec sheet.
