BRABUS has spent decades making cars faster, louder and harder to ignore. Now it has gone offshore with Sunreef, creating a 40-knot luxury catamaran that brings performance-car thinking to the water.

There is a fairly obvious question when you first see the BRABUS ULTIMA 55: is this simply a luxury yacht wearing a very expensive BRABUS outfit?

The short answer is no. And that is what makes it interesting.

The ULTIMA 55 is the first luxury catamaran born from the collaboration between Germany’s BRABUS and Polish yacht builder Sunreef Yachts. Rather than simply adding some carbon fibre, black paint and a badge to an existing boat, the two companies have combined Sunreef’s multihull engineering with BRABUS’ obsession with performance, materials and visual drama.

And, unlike most luxury boats, this one is genuinely quick.

40 knots on a 17-metre catamaran

The numbers immediately get your attention.

The BRABUS ULTIMA 55 measures 17 metres long and 5.6 metres wide, with a maximum beam of 7.6 metres when its folding platforms are deployed. Underneath it sit two 10.8-litre six-cylinder engines, each producing 725 hp (533 kW).

That gives a combined 1,450 hp and a claimed top speed of more than 40 knots – roughly 74 km/h.

That might not sound outrageous when compared with a modern supercar, but 40-plus knots on a 17-metre luxury catamaran is a different proposition altogether.

The clever bit is underneath.

The ULTIMA 55 uses an advanced foil-assisted hull system. As speed builds, the foils generate lift, reducing drag and raising the hulls higher above the water. According to Sunreef and BRABUS, this also helps improve stability, efficiency and ride comfort.

In simple terms: instead of merely pushing more boat through more water, the ULTIMA is designed to reduce how much boat is actually fighting the water.

That is considerably more interesting than simply fitting bigger engines.

It looks like a BRABUS

Predictably, BRABUS has not treated the exterior like an afterthought.

The ULTIMA 55 is available in BRABUS-inspired Graphite Black or Phantom Grey, with exposed carbon-fibre elements, illuminated BRABUS detailing and the sort of sharp, technical styling you would expect from a company better known for transforming high-performance Mercedes-Benz models.

Inside, the same theme continues with carbon-fibre detailing, premium materials, bespoke upholstery and a panoramic BRABUS control interface.

There is also a Bowers & Wilkins Marine Series sound system, because apparently 1,450 hp isn't enough entertainment.

The question nobody should ignore

The interesting debate is whether anyone actually needs a 40-knot luxury catamaran.

Probably not.

But that rather misses the point.

The BRABUS ULTIMA 55 isn't trying to be the sensible transport solution for getting six people from A to B. It is a lifestyle machine, the marine equivalent of buying a very expensive performance car when a perfectly good family sedan would do the same journey.

The difference is that the ULTIMA 55 has some genuine engineering substance underneath the theatre.

For South African buyers, it is also a reminder that the luxury performance market is no longer confined to supercars and superbikes. Our coastline, from Cape Town to Durban and up into Mozambique, is perfectly capable of providing the sort of open-water playground this machine was designed for.

The catch?

A yacht like this is never going to be about value for money. BRABUS isn't pretending otherwise.

But if the brief is serious performance, serious luxury and a machine that looks considerably more interesting than the average floating apartment, the ULTIMA 55 makes a surprisingly convincing argument.

And perhaps that is the real BRABUS trick.

It isn't just about making something faster.

It is about making people want it in the first place.
