TVS Motor Company Relaunches in South Africa

TVS Motor Company Relaunches in South Africa

If you’ve spent any time in a motorcycle dealership lately, or if you’ve been watching the price of a tank of fuel with a growing sense of dread, you’ll know that the South African market has been asking for a "sweet spot." For years, we’ve been stuck with a polarising choice, sell a kidney for a high-end brand, or take a gamble on a budget import that might leave you stranded when you need a simple spare part.

Words & Pics By: Sean Hendley, Shawn Wilders and Ronel Hendley

That gap in the market just got filled, and in a big way. Last week, TVS Motor Company, the world’s 4th largest two-wheeler manufacturer, officially relaunched in South Africa. This wasn't just a quiet entry; it was a massive strategic rollout under the banner of The Nexus Collective, a Bidvest Group company. By sitting in the same stable as Tuning Fork (Yamaha Motors SA), TVS is launching with a level of logistical backing and "peace of mind" that most brands take decades to build.

A Century of Engineering

Before we dive into the bikes, let’s talk about who TVS actually is. While the name might feel new to some, the company has been around for over 110 years. Founded in 1911 by T.V. Sundaram Iyengar, the group started with bus services and evolved into a global powerhouse.

Today, the acronym "TVS" has been repurposed to represent their core philosophy: Trust, Value, and Service. If you need proof of their engineering chops, look no further than the BMW G310 series. Those engines aren't built in Munich, they are designed and manufactured by TVS in India. They also own the legendary British brand Norton Motorcycles and are the only two-wheeler company to ever win the Deming Prize for quality. When you buy a TVS, you aren't buying a "cheap bike"; you’re buying world-class engineering that BMW trusts with their own badge.

The Launch: From Boardrooms to the Cradle

The RidezSA team attended a two part launch to see if the hype matched the hardware. Thursday, February 26th, was the formal business at Tuning Fork HQ. The energy in the room was electric, hosted by Yamaha’s brand ambassador, Barbara Khumalo and the strategic vision of Nexus collective, presented by Robin Van Rensburg (MD of The Nexus Collective). We met the global team, led by Rahul Nayak and Pradeep Chaurasiya, who made it clear that South Africa is now a key strategic hub for their international expansion.

On Friday, we headed out to Avianto in the Cradle of Humankind. To keep things objective, we sent along our "No Nonsense" team:

  • Sean Hendley: A veteran industry expert who cares about mechanical integrity and longevity.

  • Shawn Wilders: Who, with his wife Janine are the marketing gurus who put together these types of events and know how to peel back the layers of a brand to see what’s real.

  • Ronel Hendley: Coming from a heavy technical and procurement background (Macsteel Fluid Control and ABI), she looked at every weld, cable tie, and plastic finish with an engineer's eye and a procurement officer's eye for value.

TVS Motor Company Relaunches in South Africa.

Shawn Wilders and Ronel Hendley of RidezSA.

Shawn Says: If you told me a year ago that I’d be standing at a motorcycle launch with a media tag around my neck instead of blending in near the coffee station like a professional spectator, I probably would’ve laughed. But there I was at the official relaunch of TVS in South Africa, my first bike launch as “media presence”. I’m used to attending these things as a curious oke with a camera and strong opinions. This time? I was part of the room. Slightly nervous. Quietly optimistic. Unsure what to expect. The formalities were polished and purposeful. The brand story, the strategy, the big-picture talk, all of it backed by serious muscle through The Nexus Collective under Bidvest. It’s clear this isn’t a toe-in-the-water situation. It’s a proper, structured rollout with long term intent.

Then the real fun started.

Once we left the presentations behind and rolled out into the hills of Muldersdrift, the tone changed completely. The Cradle echoed with the sound of low to midrange cc motorcycles being ridden like they owed someone money. And the laughter… proper, uncontrolled, teenage style laughter, mostly from men well into their prime.

There’s something deeply entertaining about watching grown men have the time of their lives on 125s and 200s. No egos. No litre bike chest beating. Just pure, uncomplicated fun.

We were treated to a relaxed lunch under the canopies of trees, good food, good company, and that post-ride glow that only small bikes wrung out properly can give you. It felt less like a corporate launch and more like a well-organised ride day with purpose

As for the bikes?

The standout for me was the TVS Apache RR 310. A sharp, tech heavy little weapon with ride modes, a TFT display and enough punch from its 312cc motor to keep things interesting without frightening your insurance broker. It feels premium, not “budget”. Tight. Sorted. Thought through.

Then there’s the TVS Raider 125, which might just be the cheekiest 125 on the market. It looks like it wants to be taken seriously, but it also knows exactly what it is, light, efficient, remarkably affordable to run, and,  judging by the smiles, an absolute jol to ride.

And that’s the point.

TVS isn’t trying to sell you a dream you can’t afford. They’re filling the gap South Africa has been begging for, that sweet spot between prestige and budget imports. Backed by global engineering credibility and local logistical muscle, they’ve come in properly prepared.

My first launch as media? A success. I arrived unsure. I left impressed.

More importantly, I left reminded that motorcycling doesn’t have to be extreme to be exciting. Sometimes it’s just a bunch of grown men on “little” bikes, laughing in the hills of Muldersdrift, and that might be the healthiest thing the South African bike market has seen in a long time.

The all-new ADF-9000 Air is designed to meet the demands of professional adventure riders by providing the perfect balance of features and benefits for on- and off-road use. Each helmet is meticulously handcrafted using the latest TCT-Ultra technology for superior strength and light weight.

Ronel Says: The South African motorcycling landscape just got a shake-up. As a newcomer to the media industry, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I walked into the Tuning Fork Head Office for the official launch of the TVS Motor range. However, the warm welcome and professional atmosphere quickly set the stage for what turned out to be a landmark event.

TVS didn't just dip a toe in the water; they dove in headfirst with a massive seven model lineup. The range is impressively diverse, covering everything from 125cc to 310cc across several key segments:

Sport & Lifestyle: For those seeking thrill and aesthetic.

Commuting: Focused on efficiency and urban agility.

Delivery & Utility: Rugged workhorses built for the South African "gig economy" and business needs.

As someone who has been in the saddle since the age of 12, I’ve seen my fair share of bikes. While these aren't chasing land speed records, the build quality is outstanding. There’s a tangible "solidness" to these machines that immediately instills confidence.

The consensus among the media during the test-ride day was unanimous: smiles from ear to ear. That primal feeling of freedom, the same joy I felt the very first time I twisted a throttle, was written on everyone's faces.

What really positions TVS as a contender to the established "main brands" isn't just the ride, it’s the ownership experience, these bikes are set to be significantly accessible to the current market with a dedicated network of service centers to ensure riders aren't left stranded.

TVS’s Ace up its sleeve, and something we have only heard of now for the first time, they offer a D.I.Y. friendly for the hands-on riders, TVS will be offering official service kits, making maintenance easy and cost-effective, and still keeping the owners warranty intact as long as they can prove they purchased OEM TVS parts from an official TVS Dealership…. Think about that for a minute….. Most delivery drivers, due to cost constraints do most of their maintenance themselves, blowing their warranty out the window. TVS understands this and has given a viable solution. We have always maintained that brands and dealerships shouldn’t go into a price war, that just leads the buying market to believe the product is overpriced, but rather offer something with significant value, something more, something better…. A concept TVS seems to have a handle on.

The Verdict

It’s refreshing to see a brand enter the market with a focus on quality and rider support rather than just a low price tag. With a bike for every purpose and a build quality that punches well above its weight, the future looks incredibly bright for TVS Motorcycles in South Africa.

Sean Ridez

From Grease Monkey to Industry Pro: A Life Under the Hood: They say in Afrikaans, "die koeël is deur die kerk".... the bullet is through the church. Once it’s done, there’s no turning back. For Sean Hendley, that moment arrived in 1974. At just four years old, he was already in the garage with his father, swinging spanners to build his very first motorcycle, a late 60s Yamaha 50cc FS1. The mechanical bug didn't just bite; it left a permanent mark. Sean grew up in an era where speed was earned through grease and grit. Raised by a single father who balanced the demands of three children with a passion for machinery, Sean learned early on how to "make a plan." Their garage was a sanctuary of gifted projects, from a restored Norton 750 Commando to a BSA 250 Bantam. By the age of ten, Sean wasn’t just riding, he was diagnosing. His first Yamaha eventually met its end in a rubble skip in the mid 80s, but only after a lifetime of abuse. He pushed that small road bike through Moto-X tracks until the chassis snapped, frequently seeking out neighbours to weld the frame back together. When the two stroke engine seized from long stretches of wide open throttle, Sean would hammer the piston out with a block of wood and polish the internals with toothpaste, a resourceful substitute for the Brasso he couldn't afford. The 1980s served as a masterclass in automotive hustle. Sean rebuilt a rusted out Toyota 1200 bakkie so effectively his cash strapped Dad traded it for cash and a '68 Ford Escort Station Wagon that had been salvaged from a chicken coop. While his school mates spent their winter holidays tanning on the KZN South Coast, Sean spent his days in a workshop, stripping the Escort’s seized motor to the crankshaft and professionally fitting old carpets to replace the bird ravaged interior. By the time school resumed, his friends had tans, but Sean had a high performance daily driver. This relentless hands on education continued through his youth, from dropping the engine out of the family’s '69 VW Kombi to rebuilding the Jaguar XJ6 differential on his father’s custom Ford Transit van. Even his marriage has mechanical roots. Shortly after his military service, he met his wife and helped her source parts to rebuild her recovered stolen motorcycle. Today, they still ride and wrench together. With over 25 years in the motorcycle industry, Sean has transitioned from the garage floor to the forefront of automotive media. Having tested and reviewed countless bikes and cars, he brings a perspective that can't be taught in a journalism class. Because he has spent over a million kilometres in the saddle and a lifetime under the hood, he can instinctively sense when a machine is truly special, merely adequate, or simply putting on a show. Sean’s reviews are defined by this "insider" honesty, no candy coating and no brand bashing, just the raw truth from a man who knows exactly how the gears turn.
