Ducati Johannesburg Is Back. And This Time It’s Proper

Standing inside the new Ducati Johannesburg by RACE! on opening day felt slightly unreal.

Not because of the building (though the old Audi site has been turned into a properly impressive space with room for bikes to breathe, a solid demo fleet, some serious custom machinery and a few multimillion rand cars that make you stop and stare). It was the people…. and then the screens lit up.

An impressive new Ducati home

The dealership is modern without feeling sterile. New models everywhere, demos ready to ride, even Ducati mountain bikes if you want to ride on two wheels of a different sort. There’s a restaurant area designed as a proper meeting point, club gatherings, MotoGP and World Superbike watch parties planned. It’s deliberately more than a place to buy a bike and leave.

Then Ducati’s racing royalty appeared

Messages of congratulations started rolling in from Bologna. Then the names got familiar. Marc Márquez. Gigi Dall’Igna. Davide Tardozzi. Antonio Cairoli. Personal video messages, not corporate fluff, directed at Marco Casciani and the team at Ducati Johannesburg and the new operation.

For those of us standing there it was properly gobsmacking. Some of the most important people in Ducati’s global racing world taking time to welcome a dealership in Johannesburg. That lands differently when you’re a local Ducatisti.

A lot of history in one motorcycle

Marco has history with the name. Roughly two decades after his earlier involvement with Ducati Johannesburg alongside Peter Juvaris and others, the badge is back above a very different kind of place. There was apparently pressure to call it Ducati Sandton. He pushed for Johannesburg. Not geography. History.

One bike parked prominently told part of that story: a beautiful Triple Eight. It wasn’t Marco’s first motorcycle, but it carries deep personal weight. As a kid in Italy in the 1980s, his granny would take him to the park on Sundays. That’s where he first saw the young Ducatisti hanging around with their 851s, then the 888s. The sound of the engine, the dry clutch, the raw smell of the bike, the heat, the burnt fuel and oil,  that was the moment he fell in love with Ducati wholeheartedly. That memory helped set him on the path that eventually became RACE! and this dealership.

Not a hobby

He doesn’t like calling it a “passion.” Passion can sound like a hobby. For him this is just who he is and what he breathes.

That philosophy is reflected in the new dealership. Space for bikes, cars, servicing, custom work, and simply hanging around people who understand why two wheels can matter as much as four. Community first.

A new chapter

Ducati South Africa (Tertius  Cronje, Mark Walters, Mark Hung) and the wider VWGA team put in serious work behind the scenes. Bologna described the new facility as one of the best Ducati dealerships in the world. That’s a big statement. Customers and Ducatisti will decide if it lives up to it.

What is already clear is that this is a different approach.

Ducati Johannesburg isn’t just back. After watching Márquez, Dall’Igna, Tardozzi and Cairoli appear on screen to welcome it into the family, it feels like it has properly arrived.
