VW South Africa opens pre-orders for the new Volkswagen T Roc: Should You Be First in Line? We Take a Closer Look

Volkswagen has opened pre orders for the second generation T Roc ahead of its South African launch in September 2026. But before you rush to join the queue, there's one rather important question: does the T Roc make more sense than the alternatives,  including Volkswagen's own Tiguan?

Volkswagen South Africa currently lists the new T Roc Design 1.4 TSI 110kW Tiptronic at R648,900. The entry level Tiguan starts at R664,500. That's just R15,600 more. Suddenly, this isn't simply a story about a new compact SUV. It's about where your money makes the most sense.

Quick Answer: Should You Join The Queue?

Possibly, but compare it with the Tiguan first.

The T Roc is smaller, has a 475 litre luggage compartment, a redesigned interior and more digital technology than its predecessor.

The Tiguan, however, offers more space for only a relatively small increase in price. So the T Roc's case isn't that it's automatically better. It's that its size, styling and equipment may suit some buyers better.

What's New With The T Roc?

The second generation T Roc is 122mm longer than the outgoing model. Volkswagen has revised the exterior proportions, lighting and bodywork, while retaining the model's distinctive SUV/coupé shape. LED headlights and rear combination lamps are standard, with IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlights available on selected derivatives.

Inside, the changes are more extensive. The new dashboard incorporates soft touch materials, a revised digital layout and a 10.3 inch infotainment display as standard. Wireless App Connect, Digital Cockpit and a leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel are also included.

A large screen is nice… Provided you don't need a degree in computer science to operate it.

Is The T Roc Practical?

Volkswagen has retained seating for five and provides 475 litres of luggage space. That should cover normal commuting, shopping and weekend travel without requiring passengers to become luggage. The increased overall length also provides more scope for passenger space, although buyers who regularly carry people and bulky loads should compare it directly with the Tiguan.

Volkswagen T-Roc Engine And Performance

The South African entry level T Roc uses a 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine producing:

  • 110kW

  • 250Nm

  • 1,500 to 3,500rpm torque range

  • Eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission

Higher specification models use a 2.0 TSI 140kW engine, seven speed DSG transmission and 4MOTION all wheel drive.

The 1.4 TSI is aimed at everyday driving rather than outright performance. Whether it delivers the right balance of power, refinement and fuel consumption will need to be established through real world testing rather than a specification sheet.

And that's something we'll reserve judgement on until we've driven it.

Safety And Driver Assistance

Park Assist and a rear view camera are standard.

Depending on derivative and package, the T Roc can also be equipped with IQ.DRIVE systems including Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, Side Assist, Rear Traffic Alert, Exit Warning, Lane Keeping System with Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist.

The important bit: Equipment varies by derivative. Check exactly what you're buying rather than assuming every T Roc gets every system.

The Big Question: T Roc Or Tiguan?

This is where the new T Roc becomes interesting. At R648,900, the entry level T-Roc sits only R15,600 below the entry level Tiguan.

The T Roc gives you a smaller footprint and a different exterior design. The Tiguan gives you a larger vehicle and greater emphasis on family practicality.

Neither is automatically the better choice. If compact dimensions and the T Roc's design are important to you, the T Roc makes sense. If passenger and luggage space are higher priorities, we'd look at the Tiguan.

Don't compare them by monthly instalment alone. Compare the purchase price, specification, space, running costs and what you actually need the vehicle to do.

Our IQ Verdict

The new Volkswagen T Roc is a substantial change from its predecessor, with increased length, a redesigned interior, updated digital technology and a wider range of driver assistance systems.

But at R648,900, it doesn't get a free pass. The Tiguan is simply too close in price to ignore.

So, should you be first in line?

If you've compared the T Roc with the Tiguan and its size, design and specification suit your needs, then yes.

But, if you haven't made that comparison yet, we'd keep the wallet in the pocket for now. The queue isn't going anywhere. And neither is the Tiguan.

Pros

  • 110kW/250Nm 1.4 TSI

  • Eight-speed Tiptronic

  • 475-litre luggage capacity

  • 10.3-inch infotainment system

  • Wireless App-Connect

  • 4MOTION available

  • Expanded driver-assistance technology

Cons

  • Starting price is close to the Tiguan

  • Equipment varies between derivatives

  • 1.4 TSI isn't performance focused

  • Higher specification versions exceed R700,000
